Lot Essay

The iron full-rigged ship British Commerce was built for the British Shipowners' Company of Liverpool by Dobie of Glasgow in 1874. Registered at 1,417 tons, she measured 246 feet in length with a 37 foot beam and traded out of Liverpool and London to the Company's many ports of call across the world. On her last passage under the British Shipowners' flag, she raced the Grisedale and the Dunbritton home from San Francisco, arriving in the Thames on 16 February 1883, 121 days out. Once home, she was sold to W. Thomas & Co. but was lost in a collision on her first voyage under new colours.
