Norman Hartnell opened his couture house in London in 1923 and first showed in Paris in 1927. The coat is similar to one modelled by Constance Barnett, Hartnell's cousin and first model, in 1923. See catalogue number A7, "Norman Hartnell", Exhibition at Bath and Brighton, 1985.
