Lot Essay

Mary of Orange (1631-1660) was the eldest daughter of Charles I. On 2nd May 1641 she married the Dutch Prince, William, son of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange. In 1650 she gave birth to a son, the future English King William III but her husband died a few days prior to the birth in his attempt to capture Amsterdam. The restoration of Charles II gave Mary to opportunity to return to England and she died in London of smallpox on 24th December 1660.
