Lot Essay

The interesting, if not entirely politically correct, "ethnic illustrations" consist in a short note on where one finds the indigenous peoples of five areas of the globe, accompanied by a simple artist's rendering of the head of a typical example. The five races are: the Race Rouge, the Race Blanche, the Race Noire, the Malais and the Race Jaune. For example, the Malais description reads: En OCÉANIE: Malaisie et Polynesie. En ASIE. Dans la presqu'île de Malacca et les îles voisines.
Austria and Hungary are shown as separated, and Leningrad is labelled St Petersbourg, thus dating the manufacture of the globe to between 1918 and 1924, when St Petersburg became Leningrad.
