Lot Essay

A hooded wall clock of related design by Ellicott was sold Christie's London in The Vitale Collection of Highly Important European Clocks, Part II, 26 November 1996, lot 240. Another was sold Sotheby's London, 4 October 1996, lot 410.
John Ellicott F.R.S. (1706-1772) is justly considered to be one of the great clock makers of the 18th century. The present clock is one a small number of hooded wall clocks which he made. Originally it would have rested on a wall bracket with sliding key draw.
