A George III mahogany longcase clock, last quarter 18th century
The case with hood with swan-neck pediment capped by boldly carved flowerheads, with blind fret carving below (restorations), outset fluted columns supported by brickwork plinths, with ringed pilasters flanking the door, the trunk with dentil mouldings above a panel to front and sides with fluted sections flanking oval inlays, with cluster columns flanking the wavy arch trunk door with moulded frame and cross-banded border, with cross-banding also to the plinth with chamfered angles and raised on bracket feet, the cut away brass dial with silvered chapter ring, later foliate spandrels, the centre engraved with a ship and inscribed VILLE DE PARIS Taken by S.r G.B. Rodney 12 april 1782, with further foliate scroll engraving and calendar ring centred by a ho-ho bird, with cut-steel hands, signed above the arch CHA.S EDW.D GILLETT, MANCHESTER, with rolling moon (re-painted) below, the four pillar movement with anchor escapement and strike on bell
