Album containing forty-seven photographs, albumen and gelatin silver prints, sizes approx. 3 x 4½ in. to 6¼ x 8¾ in., one each signed G. Berggren and L.D. and numbered in the negatives, beige cloth, titled Album in red on front cover, sm. oblong 4to.

Including several group portraits of men, women and children in traditional dress, portraits of basket-sellers, bread-sellers and a few military potraits.

Berggren was born in Stockholm in 1835. From the age of 20 to 35 he travelled around Europe where he was involved in various projects. In 1866 he boarded a cargo ship in Odessa, on its way to Marseille but decided to stop in Istanbul where he stayed for the rest of his life. In 1870 he opened a studio at 414 rue Péra. He was extremely active from 1875-1900 documenting various aspects of the empire. He died at the age of 85.
