Lot Essay

Ludovico Woolfgang Hart was a professional photographer, formerly a sapper in the Royal Engineers. He wrote a manual entitled Photography Simplified in 1860. He was active in Egypt and the Middle East in 1863-64 and worked in collaboration with Charles Lallemand to publish a major work entitled Galerie Universal des Peuples in 1865 which comprised 100 prints of ethnic portraits and studies from Syria, Egypt and Nubia. It was distributed by A. Varroquier in Paris.
