A Balkan Yataghan, And Another, Made For A Boy
Both 19th Century
The first with single-edged blade with silver-damascened Arabic inscription on one side 'Made by Mustafa: its owner is Osman in the year 1274 A.H./1760 A.D.' and a star on the other, the forte with silvered copper filigree collar (repaired) set with a green glass bead on each side, the hilt with copper filigree strap set with pieces of fluted red coral (two missing), and eared walrus-ivory grip-scales, in original textile-covered wooden scabbard with white metal locket and chape chased with foliage in relief, the latter with monster-head finial; the second with similar blade decorated with silver-damascened arabesques along the back-edge on each side, a panel inscribed 'Sarajevo', and 'Bosnia' (in Arab characters) on one side at the forte, and a panel of Arabic calligraphy on the other ('The work of Husain'), the hilt en suite with the last, and original leather-covered wooden scabbard
