A Visored Bascinet (Hounskull)
In 14th Century style
Of russet steel, the acutely-pointed skull forged in one piece but welded down the front, the edge bordered by numerous small lining-holes below a row of iron vervelled, and acutely pointed 'pig-faced' visor (Klappvisier) attached by a central adjustable hinge secured by a screw to the centre of the brow, pierced with flanged eye and mouth slots and numerous circular ventilation holes (small simulated damage crack on right)
12.3/8in. (31.4cm.) high
This is a well made early reproduction, apparently based on the hounskull formerly in the J. Hefner-Alteneck Collection and later in the Astor Collection at Hever Castle. See Laking I, p. 238, fig. 282
