A Rare .451 Ghaye's Patent Breech-Loading Percussion Rifle
By A.H. Knoops, Rotterdam, circa 1860
With blued sighted two-stage barrel, the breech signed in full in gold letters on the right side and stamped 'L. Ghaye Brevet' on top, Whitforth rifled, and with bayonet lug under the barrel, adjustable case-hardened sliding back-sight, blued breech and tang, case-hardened back-action lock (nipple replaced), figured walnut three-quarter stock in three sections, iron mounts including blued trigger-guard and case-hardened barrel-release lever, sling mounts, iron fore-end cap, and some original finish, Lige proof
31in. (80cm.) barrel
Ghaye's sliding-barrel action is similar to that of Frederick Prince, but uses a different method of locking the barrel. The calibre of .451 and the presence of a bayonet lug suggest that the present example may have been used in military trials. See Howard L. Blackmore, Guns and Rifles of the World, p. 59
