Lot Essay

Dr. Pamela Tudor-Craig, who has examined the picture, suggests that although the artist is clearly indebted to Rogier van der Weyden, comparisons can be made with several known pictures painted by Flemish artists working in England in the late 15th century. Compare, for example, the facial types in The Martyrdom of Saint Erasmus in the collection of the Society of Antiquities, The Flagellation in Canterbury Cathedral and the triptych in the Almshouse Chapel, Sherbourne, Dorset (C.Grössinger, North European Panel Paintings, London, 1992, pp.194-9, no. 54).
