An early 19th-Century vacuum pump,
with ivory maker's plaque engraved BATE LONDON, the double-rack action motion enclosed within two column supports, the bridge raised from the base by twin ionic columns with two spherical brass caps, the brass handle with two part-lignum vitae hand-piece, the platform base supporting the stage by four columns with brass finials, the 8¼in. (21cm.) dia. main vacuum plate supporting the shaped glass dome, with accessories including a pair of Magdeburg hemispheres, a tapering glass cylinder, a vacuum bulb with tap, and two other items, overall length -- 22in. (56cm.)
