Bred and owned by the Earl of Jersey, Bay Middleton was by Sultan out of Cobweb. In 1836, he won both the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby ridden by James Robinson, to whom Lord Jersey paid a fee of 200 gns. for his Derby victory. He went on to win the Buckhurst Stakes and the Grand Duke Michael Stakes at Newmarket. Lord George Bentinck purchased Bay Middleton for 4,000 and retired him to stud at Turf Inn, Doncaster.
