Lot Essay

This watercolor comes from the wedding album presented by the Orleans family to the Duke of Montpensier (1824-1890), who was the fifth son of King Louis-Phillippe of France, and married Marie-Louise-Fernande of Bourbon on 10 October 1846.

The Montpensier Album contained watercolors by contemporary painters including Isabey, Lami, Bonington, Delacroix, and Chasseriau. The subjects reflected the interests of the Orleans family and of Montpensier including Spanish and Catholic themes, as well as Orientalism, military and popular genre. All of the artists who contributed to the Album were invited to a feast on 22 February 1847 at Vincennes to meet the new Duchess of Montpensier.
