Lot Essay
Sir Walter by Whitworth out of Esther won two races at three and started as the second favorite in the 1819 St. Leger. This was the famous year in which the race was run twice. Antonio won the race after several horses, including Sir Walter were 'not ready' at the start. The Stewards declared a false start and reran the race with Sir Walter winning (Antonio not having run again). After a formal appeal to the Stewards of the Jockey Club, it was determined that the Stewards should not have allowed the second race and declared Antonio the winner of the 1819 St. Leger. At four, Sir Walter won the King's Plate at York.
