This exquisite charcoal drawing exemplifies the bravura technique for which Sargent is so celebrated. According to a note from the sitter's family, the portrait was drawn at Sargent's studio in Tite Street, Chelsea, on Friday July 27, 1923, in one sitting which lasted from 10:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
