PLATH, SYLVIA. The Colossus. Poems. London: Heinemann, [1960].
8o (220 x 143 mm). Original green cloth, spine gilt-lettered, dust jacket (worn and soiled).
FIRST EDITION of the poet's first book. AN OUTSTANDING PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Plath to the parents of her husband Ted Hughes on the half-title: "For Edith & Willy/with love/October 27, 1960." Affixed to the dedication page (the book is dedicated to Hughes) is a color photograph (87 x 89mm) of Plath with her two young children on the lawn of their home; it is inscribed by her on verso: "Frieda & Nick & me." This photograph (another copy of which is in the Plath archive at Smith College) was probably taken in July 1962 by her mother during her visit to London (see Letters Home by Sylvia Plath, ed. Aurelia Schober Plath, NY, 1975, p. 499, for a photograph of about the same time). It was pasted into this copy at a later date. Plath inscriptions and autographs are rare on the market.
