Lot Essay

The present work, dating from 1925, belongs to a group of oils which Smith carried out after a period of living in Grez-sur-Loing, Paris, Lausanne and Lyons during the early 1920s. From 1923 to 1926 Smith lived mainly in Avenue Brune in Paris, while retaining a studio in Charlotte Street, London. In April 1926 the Mayor Gallery in London held Smith's first one-man exhibition.
