Lot Essay

Born in Cambridge in 1920 Ronald Searle studied at the Cambridge School of Art from 1936 to 1939. After serving in the army during World War II Searle returned to London and started working for magazines and books such as Punch and Lilliput. His humorous illustrations and caricatures have a distinctive, individual style.
