Lot Essay

C.J.A. Jorg, op. cit., p. 278 notes that it is likely that plates with this decoration, not seen in other dinner pieces, were made for display rather than use, and cites the prints by Amsterdam poet and engraver Jan Luyken (1649-1712) for Dutch Bible editions as the source for their design.
