He standing before splash-glazed rockwork with hat in hand, slightly turned with smiling expression, wearing a belted coat decorated with clouds and a loosely tied white scarf round his neck, she with hands held forward and serene smile, an iron-red and gilt necklace round her neck and her hair dressed la Fontanges in tight curls with a white mantle, both with black shoes and supported on flat bases

The authors also discuss the Bonnart engravings from his Personnages de Qualit 1600-1715 series of French noble figure types which probably provided the source for these and the other related models.
