JAPANESE SCHOOL (c. 1890)
A collection of Japanese wood-cuts of Irises. [c. 1890]. 12 prints, sheet size: 309 x 202mm., printed in colours from woodblocks and finished by hand. (Numbers removed from the foot of each print with resultant thinning of papers or occasional small holes.) Unbound in modern black cloth solander box, black morocco label on upper cover.
An interesting selection of a number of varieties of the most subtly beautiful of all the flowering plants. The Iris is an emblem of victory in Japanese iconography. Whereas in the west the iris was frequently depicted in a formulaic triangular shape, that geometric concept of the flower was rejected by Japanese artists, who chose instead to allow the flower its delicate, natural, spreading form as represented in the present album.
