Lot Essay

Related to the large picture of the subject painted for the Chiesa della Maddalena in Venice, A. Mariuz, G.D. Tiepolo, Venice, 1971, p. 143, pl. 266. The picture is dated '17.5', a date interpreted by George Knox and Adriano Mariuz as 1775. George Knox records, in his Catalogue Raisonn of the chalk drawings, eight studies of hands and feet related to the composition: two in the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg, his nos. 70 and 74 and six in the Correr Museum, Venice, nos. 108-113.
A similar angel holding an incense-burner appears in the Institution of the Eucharist in the Galleria dell'Accademia, Venice.
