Lot Essay

This drawing is related to another of the same subject and approximately the same size from the Ferretti di Castelferretto collection sold at Christie's London, 2 July 1996, lot 1. The anonymous artist worked in the orbit of Zuccaro and was named by Philip Pouncey on the basis of a design for an apse bearing the arms of Pope Pius V Ghislieri (1566-1572) in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, P. Ward-Jackson, op. cit., no. 484. A drawing related to the same apse is in the Albertina, Vienna, V. Birke and J. Kertsz, op. cit., Inv. 608.
