Lot Essay

This lot and the following six were part of two albums identified as the work of Soehene by the signature of the artist on a series of etchings after various designs contained in these lots. Executed in brush and brown wash in a technique not unlike Goya's, these drawings reveal the imagery of artists such as Bosch and Callot taken up by later, more popular artists. Drawings by Grandville display a similarity of taste for fantastic subjects.
