Lot Essay

The present unpublished work depicts Piazzetta's wife, Rosa, whom he married on November 22, 1724. Born in 1701, she acted as a model for her husband in both his presentation drawings and his paintings; see, for example, the Pastoral in the Art Institute, Chicago, and a number of Teste dei Caracttere (G. Knox, Piazzetta, National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1983, nos. 28-31).

We are grateful to Professor George Knox for confirming the attribution on the basis of a transparency.
