Lot Essay

The composition is derived from a 1505 drawing generally accepted to be a work by Albrecht Drer, in the Uffizi, Florence (see F. Winkler, Zie Zeichnungen Albrecht Drers, 1937, II, pp. 40-1, no. 317). The present painting is one of several versions, which include one attributed to Jan de Cock, sold Sotheby's, London, July 5, 1995, lot 24, (190,000) and another in the Muse d'Art et d'Histoire, Geneva, Inv. no. 1845-7. A later copy by Jan Breughel I, signed and dated 1604, is also in the Uffizi, Florence (see K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der ltere, 1979, pp. 436-9, no. 575, fig. 527).
