Lot Essay

Margret Klinge in the catalogue of the exhibition Adriaen Brouwer, David Teniers, a Loan exhibition (op. cit.) describes the present painting as follows 'This picture of the farewell to the inn is among the amusing little scenes from peasant life. Somewhat reluctantly, but waving his cap joyfully, the peasant is being led away by his wife. The dag prances ahead of them. Other people too are on their way home.

In the coloration, the formation of the figures and the careful drawing this picture belongs to Teniers' Brussels period, at the beginning of the 1650s.'
