See for a half length portrait of the sitter, by an unknown German hand, S. Lorenz, ed., Das Haus Württemberg, 1997, p.255, ill. Groth was active as a court painter in Stuttgart (catalogue Schwerin 1954, p.40).
The sitter was the son of Friedrich Carl, Duke of Württemberg and Eleonora Juliana, Markgräfin of Brandenburg-Ansbach, and married Maria Augusta, Princess of Thurn und Taxis (1706-1756) on 1 May 1727. He received the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1721. He reigned from 1733 until his death (H. Tüchle, "Herzog Carl Alexander (1733-1737) in 900 Jahre Haus Württemberg, 1984, pp.227-237). His son Carl Eugen was to marry Elisabeth Sophie Friederike of Brandenburg-Bayreuth (1732-1780) in 1748 (see for her portrait lot 38).
