Lot Essay

The sitter, daughter of Karl Leopold, Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1678-1747) and Catharina Ivanovna of Russia (1682-1733), married Anton Ulrich, Duke of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1714-1774) in 1739, known for his collection of Dutch paintings. She became regent of Russia in 1740/41, as Anna Leopoldovna. The present portrait depicts her wearing the Russian regalia.
