Lot Essay

This picture derives from the famous portrait which Van Dyck executed for King Charles I towards the end of the 1630s, now in the National Gallery, London (no. 1172). A modello for the original portrait is in the Royal Collection (see O. Millar,The Tudor, Stuart and Early Georgian Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen, I, London, 1963, no. 144).
