Lot Essay

Both panels are based on compositions by Guido Reni and his school. The Massacre of the Innocents is after Reni's 1611 painting in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna, while the Marytrdom of St. Sebastian borrows from works by Reni and Elisabetta Sirani.
