Lot Essay

These striking consoles formed part of the collection of Colonel Henri de Pfyffer d'Altishofen in his apartments in the Vatican, inherited from his mother Marie. They were later moved to the family chteau de Heidegy in the Canton of Lucerne. Their imposing design, with lion monopodia supports l'antique, relate to contemporary Parisian tables executed by Jacob-Desmalter. A group of Roman side tables with similar supports in the Palazzo Quirinale is illustrated in A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Patrimonio Artistico del Quirinale: I Mobili Italiani, Milan, 1996, pp. 204-210. Another related side table in the Scala Theatre, Milan, is illustrated in G. Morazzoni, Il Mobile Neoclassico Italiano, Milan, 1955, fig. CCXCIII.
