Of spherical form, the hinged top opening to an interior fitted with a central arcaded and pedimented compartment flanked by small drawers and with a hinged compartment concealing a pin cushion flanked by further lidded compartments, on a circular stem and incurving tripartite base

Lot Essay

This globe-form worktable with its intricately fitted interior is a distinctive Biedermeier form which required significant technical skill to produce. Similar examples, both in private collections in Germany, are illustrated in A. Wilkie, Biedermeier, New York, 1987, p. 100-101, figs. 90-92.
