Each with channelled frame, the arched back with pierced Gothic splat centred by a pierced roundel and flanked by serpentine arms, above a frieze inlaid with boxwood, above a later padded drop-in seat covered in yellow watered silk, on turned fluted legs joined by fluted stretchers, and toupie feet, previously but not originally over upholstered (2)

Lot Essay

The chairs' wheel-backs display fretted sunflower medallions such as appear on a chair of the 1780s at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (see M. Tomlin, Catalogue of Adam Period Furniture, London, 1982, p. 135, no. P/12).
