Lot Essay

Messrs. A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788 (pl. 76) illustrated a 'Dressing Drawers' pattern with bow-front alongside one with serpentined apron and Grecian-scrolled legs. The various features were combined in a sketch for a chest-of-drawers in the 1789 Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster (see L. Boynton, (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 118).
