A MATCHED PAIR OF LATE VICTORIAN MAHOGANY HALL STOOLS

Each with a rectangular seat with pierced rectangular back with pierced baluster gallery, flanked on each side by downswept arms on circular supports, on rectangular tapering sabre legs joined by stretchers, one with registration kite mark for 13 December 1883, and stamped 'JAS. SHOOLBRED & CO 1791' the other with two registration kite marks for 13 December 1883 and stamped 'JAS SHOOLBRED & CO' and '8986' and with enamel plaque 'JAMES SHOOLBRED ... TOTTENHAM HOUSE TOTTENHAM COURT ROAD LONDON ' (2)

Lot Essay

James Shoolbred and Co. of Tottenham Court Road, became one of the first large department stores in London. They expanded from a small draper business and started to manufacture high quality furniture circa 1870, for which they were given a Royal warrant by the mid-1880s.
A similar pair of stools with registration marks, was sold from the estate of Mary, Viscountess Rothermere, Christie's New York, 12 April 1997, lot 828. A single stool with the registration mark for December 1883 was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 8 February 1996, lot 43.
