The Rotterdam II was built in Belfast by Harland & Wolff in 1878 and first named British Empire. She was bought in 1886 by the Nederlandsch Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij (NASM), better known under its later name Holland Amerika Lijn. As her name implies, the Rotterdam II was the second ship with that name owned by the HAL. When they commissioned a third ship named Rotterdam in 1897 the ship in the presentation was renamed Edam and sold in 1899.
