Lot Essay

Johan Bennetter, a sailor turned painter, studied in his native Oslo, where in 1849 he won a scholarship to work in The Hague under Louis Meijer. In 1852 he moved to Paris, worked with Theodore Gudin and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1855 to 1870. In 1880 he returned to Norway, where he settled.
