Baluster form, on stepped circular base, the body and foot fluted, the front applied with a River god's mask, with leaf-capped double-scroll handle, the rim applied with an ovolo scrolled band, the front engraved with a Baron's armorials, marked on body

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Rothschild, as borne by Lionel de Rothschild, eldest son and heir of Baron Nathan Meyer de Rothschild. He succeeded his father to the barony of the Austrian Empire in 1836 and was granted these armorials by Royal licence in 1838.

A similar ewer of the same year owned by Lionel's brother, Meyer Amschel de Rothschild (1818-1874) was sold from the Rothschild and Rosebery collection at Mentmore, Sotheby's, London, February 11, 1999, lot 2.
