Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Lyckle de Vries for confirming the attribution (private communication 3 March 1999). He dates the picture early in the artist's career, comparing it to Moses striking the Rock in the Stdelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt am Main, and to John the Baptist preaching in the Wilderness in the Nivaagards Malerisamling, Denmark (K. Braun, op. cit., nos. 36 and 58, both illustrated).
