Lot Essay

Sabine, Lady Winn (d. 1789), the wife of Sir Roland Winn, 5th Bt. (d. 1786) of Nostell Priory, Yorkshire, inherited a remarkable art collection on the death of her Huguenot father, Jacques Philippe, Baron d'Hervart, in 1780. She was descended from Bartholomaus Herwarth (b. 1607) of Augsburg, who, having established the family bank at Lyons, became Intendant des Finances Royales before his appointment in 1660 as Controleur des Finances under King Louis XIV. The collection was listed at Vevey in Switzerland in 1780 (op. cit.). Part of the Herwarth family collection of plate was sold at Christie's Geneva, 19 May 1992, lots 153-167.
