Half-title and title printed in red and black. 56 plates (48 engraved, 7 double-page and 8 chromolithographs), by Muguet, Boisset, Hymaly, Sauvageot, Bachelier, Guillaumont and others after Coste. (Lower quarter of the work with old dampstain affecting the image area of about half of the plates, slight surface damage to the double-page plate numbered LIX-LX.) 20th-century half leather gilt (affected by damp).
Coste, like his collaborator Eugne Flandin (see lot 189), took part in the French diplomatic mission to Persia in 1839-1841. He had previously worked as architect to Mehmet Ali in Egypt from 1818 to 1828. The present work is Coste's final large scale publication on Persia.
