FIRST EDITION of "a classic on the subject" (Curzon). "In an era of mediocrity in the American foreign service, Schuyler was an outstanding figure' (DAB). The author travelled widely in the area described in the present work and during the period 1865 to 1878 held a number of diplomatic posts in Moscow, Revel, Saint Petersburg and finally Constantinople.
