The Persian nasta'liq verses translate:
"You struck me with a thousand effective daggers and I did not resign my life
Because of .... my .... will drop by the blow of a dagger
Ja'far, you struck the dagger of death out of anger
I [am prepared] to die for you; give me life with another strike of your dagger"
These verses indicate that this dagger was commmissioned by a certain lady for Ja'far Quli Khan who is riding the elephant on the face of the hilt with his name engraved in minute letters behind him. The name Ja'far also appears in the verses which are probably written by the lady who ordered it to be made. Their meaning is rendered completely clear by the depiction on the reverse of the hilt.
There are seven holders of the name Ja'far Quli Khan recorded in the Qajar period, so further identification is impossible.
