Lot Essay
Charles Dodgson met Evelyn Sophia Dubourg (1861-1917) on 20 January 1873, when she was twelve years old. Her parents were Augustus W. Dubourg, Clerk in the House of Lords and Ellen, born Nightingale. The portrait here offered is from one of two occasions recorded in the diaries, when Dodgson photographed Evelyn. On the 13th August the Dubourgs spent a day with the photographer in Oxford.
For a time, Dodgson regularly stayed with the Dubourgs in London and took Evelyn to the theatre. Alexander Dubourg and Dodgson corresponded about theatrical matters.
