Lot Essay

A student at the State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow in 1921, Khalip became an admirer of the photography of Rodchenko and Max Alpert among others. When he graduated later the same year, he began working as a cameraman and stills photographer as well as for various Russian newspapers. He was often commissioned by Rodchenko and Stepanova to take photographs for their photograph album The Red Army from 1938-41. Following the Second World War, where Khalip served at the front as correspondent for the Krasnaya Zvezhda he worked for Ogonyok among other papers.
