Lot Essay

Edward Hudson founded Country Life magazine in 1897. He was a significant patron of the architect Edwin Lutyens, commissioning three houses (Deanery Garden in Berkshire, Lindisfarn Castle in Northumberland, and Plumpton Place in Sussex) as well as the architect's first office building. Hudson was also recognized as a distinguished collector and many pieces from his collection, including these shelves, are illustrated in The Dictionary of English Furniture. Christie's sold pieces from his collection following his death in a single owner catalogue on 27 April 1937.
