Lot Essay

Corby Castle was purchased by Lord William Howard, third son of the 4th Duke of Norfolk, during the reign of James I. The house, widely known for its early 'arcadian' landscape conceived in the 1720's, was transformed for Henry Howard in 1812. This bookcase and the following lot (originally a group of three library bookcases) may have been commissioned as part of this renovation.

Two further Regency pieces also probably dating from Henry Howard's renovation were sold by Sir John Howard-Lawson, Bt., Christie's London, 7 July 1994, lots 148 and 150.
